ages 12 to 28, who are dedicated to making a difference in their community.
Sponsored by a Lions club, each Leo club elects its own officers, schedules
its own meetings, and selects its own fundraisers and service projects.
- Lions
of Illinois Eye Research Institute - The Lions of Illinois Eye
Research Institute (LIERI) was built in 1985 by generous contributions
from the Lions Clubs of America. The Institute houses research laboratories
and offices for many of the basic vision scientists and Ophthalmologists
in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University
of Illinois at Chicago. Research activities are supported by private
and national grant funding agencies and by the Department of Ophthalmology
and Visual Sciences. The Lions of Illinois have played a very active
role in the development of the UIC Eye Center's research and patient
care facilities. The Lions raised over $5 million to help build
the Lions of Illinois Eye Research Institute for the UIC Department
of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and created a $1.1 million endowed
chair for ocular research. In addition, the Lions have established a
patient referral network among virtually all clubs in Illinois. The
participating clubs often sponsor indigent patients with severe eye
disease to be treated at the UIC Eye Center.
